Go Bokke! South Africa win the Rugby World Cup
So South Africa won the rugby. YAY! For anyone that knows me and might be thinking it, no that was not sarcasm. I genuinely am happy for them.
As for being happy for SA as a nation? Sure but I think the full extent of the euphoria surrounding South Africa winning the world cup eludes me. I mean really, they won...not me...I didn't win anything.
What will SA get out of it? Probably less tourists because we just pissed off every rugby lover in every qualifying nation. They are proposing a public holiday for when the Bokke return...great! Like SA can afford to be less productive.
Maybe its because I never played team sports? I just don't make that connection. That ownership over something that functions whether you are alive or die driving home drunk after celebrating a victory.
So where to from here? Do you think we will win it again in 4 years? We could. We could build on this like everyone is saying we must and get more kids playing rugby. I know my little brother is stoked.
Reality? Well the history of our neighbouring nations suggests that politics will overwhelm the best efforts of coaches to pick the best team. Corrupt politicians will subsequently replace the best coaches (oh wait!that already happened). And in the end those politicians will steal the money that was supposed to pay the players and coaches. Am I being too pessimistic here? I hope so. I suspect though that there is a little to much truth in my rant than I would like.
On the lighter side of things, at least this gives me some amusement for the week. How so? Well my new favourite question is "Oh by the way, who won?"
